When the massive, bulky structure of AEKE's smartfitness mirrorarrived at my residence, I must confess that I was more than slightly doubtful.

In the end, can a large piece of glass and plastic truly provide the same kind of exercise you'd get in a commercial gym or?personal trainer?

Well, the Chinese company certainly believes it can, and its product is different from those like Magic AI, Echelon, andVahaso much so that it provides everything necessary for a complete full-body strength training session, thanks to dual cables that emerge from a robotic platform located at the bottom of the unit.

Featuring two separate handle attachments, leg cuffs, and a straight barbell, the Smart Home Gym K1 offers everything needed to perform a variety of exercises, ranging from intense chest workouts to squats that target muscle growth — all while its AI coaching system closely monitors your progress.

A big ol’ unit

Let's get straight to the point: the AEKE Smart Home Gym is a serious piece of equipment. It weighs 77kg and has dimensions of 455 x 695 x 1,740mm when the robotic deadlift platform is folded into its storage position.

Press a small button on the side, and that platform needs 1,468mm of space to function. Overall, you'll need at least 1 square meter of room in your home for this to work, plus a strong set of arms to get it through the door initially.

Fortunately, it features a set of caster wheels at the back, making it somewhat easier to move when not in use. However, this specific test kit also included an optional bench (which is quite heavy), various handle attachments, and a set of smart scales to accurately measure body composition and monitor progress.

All of this equipment connects effortlessly and swiftly to the 43" 4K display through Bluetooth, with 2.1 surround sound providing voice guidance when required. Setup is as easy as connecting to a Wi-Fi network and establishing an account.

From that point, the AEKE Smart Home Gym mirror will then ask several questions regarding your current fitness level, goals, and the types of exercises you enjoy. The system includes strength training, yoga, stretching, meditation, cardio, boxing, pilates, HIIT, and Tai Chi.

It's not inexpensive, though, with prices in the US beginning at$3,498with the optional collapsible seat, or$3,298without it. AEKE does not list it in British Pounds, but they can deliver to UK addresses, where it costs€2,983for the bench package, excluding shipping costs.

Strength is its main advantage

I prefer to fill my week with a combination of strength and cardiovascular exercises, checking the box for appearance by including some muscle-building workouts and making sure my muscles don't shrink with occasional low-rep, heavy lifting sessions. I also add in a few runs or light sparring to maintain heart health.

During the first configuration of the AEKE Smart Home Gym K1, I input all this data into the mirror, and it subsequently created a program for me based on the kinds of exercises I like and my objectives.

It also measured my weight and evaluated body fat with the included scales, although I'm not certain how reliable they were, given that they seemed a bit like they had come from a Kinder Egg.

The first session offered a soft start to an upper body exercise routine, utilizing the twin handles connected to the nylon cord cables to offer electronically adjustable resistance. AEKE claims it can provide 220lbs (approximately 100kg) of resistance in 1lb (about 0.5kg) steps through a dial on the display.

Right before the session began, the mirror advised me to put on snug clothing, take off any hats (?!), and make sure the room is well-lit, all so the camera and AI technology can more accurately monitor my posture and provide guidance.

A genuine digital coach then appeared on the screen or mirrored surface, which initially felt a bit strange and advanced, but quickly became natural. With a muscular individual showing each movement, it was then my turn to imitate, as the device automatically modified resistance when it sensed the exercises were too simple for me.

Furthermore, the resistance can be adjusted to provide greater flexibility for enhancing power and explosive strength, or to focus more on the eccentric or concentric phase of the exercises if you're really into optimizing your results.

Tougher than it looks

I was happily surprised by how challenging this first workout turned out, with the instant feedback indicating that I should tuck my elbows while doing a chest press and twist my wrists a bit during a bicep curl to get the most out of every repetition.

The difficulty isn't only due to the large amount of digital resistance you can add, but also the ongoing stress that the digital resistance technology provides. After about 12 repetitions on a chest press, my chest muscles were burning.

It's also convenient that the handles and the barbell include a specific button (an optional accessory for the latter) which quickly releases the resistance.

This allows you to comfortably position yourself for a dumbbell or barbell bench exercise. Once set up, press the digital button and the weight is added. It's also ideal when you're doing those last tough repetitions or pushing to the point of failure.

In addition, I was impressed by the variety of exercises that could be done using just a bench, two handles, and a straight bar. Flat bench presses, deadlifts, squats, and even hip thrusts were all part of the different strength workouts I tried over several weeks.

Throughout, the AI-driven assistant and outward-facing camera would offer guidance on technique and rhythm to maximize the benefits of each exercise.

After the exercise session concluded, the results were input into the big data system, which then decided the structure of the next workout, using progressive overload to enhance strength, or making it easier if it sensed the previous session was too intense.

Be quiet, my pounding heart

but Despite having excellent guided sessions for strength, some of the other workouts didn't provide the same level of experience. Stretching, for instance, featured videos with poor dubbing that seemed unsure which language to use.

Likewise, without extra cardiovascular equipment, like a treadmill or a stationary bike, it's quite challenging to get an effective, intense cardio session. These types of workouts not only take up a significant amount of space, but they also depend on items such asmountain climbers and burpeesto get a good sweat going.

That works for a quick, intense workout now and then, but it's not as satisfying when considering long-term objectives. For individuals aiming to develop strong cardiovascular endurance, participants may find a class setting or a specialized equipment more beneficial, such as aPeloton Tread or the new Peloton Cross Training Bike+.

High-intensity interval training sessions were more engaging and difficult, although there is significant jumping between floor-based exercises and switching attachments, which is more restrictive than using free weights, regardless of the perspective.

That being said, there is a comprehensive set of exercise sessions that, although nowhere close to as lively or interactive as those from Peloton oriFitThey effectively target most of the primary muscle groups in the body. Alternatively, you can create a personalized exercise routine by choosing from a wide variety of workouts.

If the current activities become tedious, there are several interactive games that utilize the front-facing camera. AJust Dance rip-off and a Flappy Birdclone was a hit with my children.

Verdict

The AEKE Smart Home Gym is certainly one of the most interactive fitness mirrors I've ever used, shifting from basic guided exercises to a system that offers sufficient equipment for an effective strength training routine.

It didn't persuade me to cancel my gym subscription, as the dual cables provide limited options for specific exercises, and I noticed that movements like deadlifts and squats didn't feel very comfortable.

The same applies when you begin significantly increasing the weight, as the resistance curve seems artificial, and I'm uncertain whether the nylon cord serving as the cable can handle much heavier loads.

However, if you're limited on space at home and prefer to avoid the bulk of a multi-gym, a set of free weights or several kettlebells, the AEKE Smart Home Gym offers an efficient option that simplifies long-term fitness planning.

Unfortunately, based on my understanding, the AEKE Smart Home Gym does not connect with fitness watches from Apple, Garmin, and others, and there is no straightforward method to integrate it with any other fitness-tracking application you may utilize.

Rather, it functions as an independent system that conducts all its evaluations internally. Ideal for beginners in fitness, but possibly not what serious exercise enthusiasts seek.
